Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was the last of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. He the son of the praetor Marcus Annius Verus and his wife, Domitia Calvilla. His father died when he was three and was raised by his mother and grandfather. When Marcus Aurelius was 17, he was adopted by Antoninus Pius as his new heir. In the same year, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius' adopted father, died making Antoninus Pius emperor and Marcus Aurelius the direct heir.

Now heir to the throne, Marcus studied Greek and Latin under tutors such as Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. He married Antoninus's daughter Faustina (Faustina II or Faustina the Younger) in 145. Faustina was the only one of Antoninus Pius and Faustina I's children to see the gain the title of Emperor and Empress.
