This 5 Peso Cuauhtemoc Silver Coin only circulated from 1947-1948 and was made of 30g of .900 fine silver.
Obverse side of the coin has the image of Cuauhtemoc, the last Aztec emperor. His name means ‘one who descends as an eagle’ in reference to how an eagle dives from the sky to grab its prey in its sharp talons. His name is a symbol of aggressiveness and determination. It is this determination that served him well as he ruled from 1520-1521. Though he was only 25 when he became emperor, he was known to be a great warrior and even earned the respect of the leader of the Spanish invasion, Cortes’. This respect lives on as he is honored in statues all over Mexico for his standing up to the Spanish invasion. He truly was determined. Above the image of Cuauhtemoc is ‘CINCO PESOS’. Below the image is ‘30 GRAMOS LEY .900’. Also at the bottom near the writing is the Mexican mint’s mark ‘Mo’. To the right of the image is either ‘1947’ or ‘1948’.
The reverse of the coin has a scene famous to all Mexicans. It is the image of a golden eagle perched on a cactus with a rattlesnake in its mouth. This is the scene that early Aztecs saw and felt that was a sign that this was to be the site where they would build their great city. That city is known today as ‘Mexico City’. Above this scene is ‘ESTADO UNIDOS MEXICANOS’.
